How temperature shapes the air we breathe

When we step outside on a summer afternoon, we can often feel the dense, stifling quality of the air. In winter, the stillness can feel even thicker, making us feel like we’re choking on air. Most of us assume that air pollution is at its worst on scorching days, but in reality, extreme temperatures, whether high or low, greatly shape the air around us. So, how do hot and cold temperatures influence air pollution levels, and what does it mean for our health?

World Economic Forum: Why and how business leaders should include air quality in decision-making

The World Economic Forum asked us air quality in business decision-making. Despite its significant health and economic impacts, air quality remains under-addressed in corporate strategy. Businesses that embed air quality into strategy stand to gain in talent acquisition, investor trust, regulatory preparedness and overall sustainability leadership.

With the return to school and involvement in a ride commemorating Ella Kissi-Debrah, our minds have turned to the impact of air pollution on children. Many people will be aware of the link between air pollution exposure and life-long reduced lung function. But there are also some links to behavioural difficulties and new research has even connected it to lower earnings in later life. Not to despair - there is good evidence that problems can be reversed or at least halted, for instance an increase in walking or cycling to school when pollution has been reduced. We are happy to see local London initiatives for children such as Camden's Year of Clean Air for Schools and the new children's environmental health unit at Bart's. For lifelong health, please join us on our mission - Personalising Air Quality, for everyone.

Meet the team

Meet Lydia Jin our newest intern, starting on Monday! Lydia says: Entering my third year at Dartmouth College, I am pursuing a degree in Computer Science with a minor in Economics. On campus, I work at the Digital Applied Learning and Innovation (DALI) Lab, where I have had the opportunity to work on diverse projects, ranging from educational games focused on environmental awareness to debugging tools for software developers. My experience has allowed me to apply my technical skills to solve real-world problems in innovative ways.

This autumn, I'm looking forward to working with Air Aware Labs because the team's goals align with my passion for using technology to address pressing global issues. I am eager to contribute my skills in software development and data visualization to help raise awareness about air pollution and its impact on public health. During my time there, I will be sure to learn from the innovative environment and I am excited to be part of a team that is making a tangible difference in the world.
