Understanding your data

What it means

AirTrack is the first step to understand how air quality affects your health and performance. Knowing your exposure will help you access strategies to take preventative action. We give you the fundamental information about the air pollution around you for your activities. This draws on high resolution data sources that will vary geographically and over time, so please keep checking in.

Optimise your workout

We are building a suite of tools that will help you on this journey. Remember that reducing your exposure to air pollution by a even a small amount on a regular basis will pay dividends with your long-term health. And we hope your improved performance levels will keep you active and exercising even more!

PM2.5 (fine particulate matter)

PM2.5 is seen to pose the biggest risk to health. While there is no safe limit, the World Health Organisation recommends a daily limit of 15 micrograms per cubic metre. Exposure to PM2.5 can affect all our organs and increases the risk of heart disease, dementia, pregnancy complications and reproductive difficulties. Even short-term exposure can reduce athletic speed and performance.
Car fumes icon

NO2 (nitrogen dioxde)

NO2 inflames our airways and we want your airways to be working optimally! Again there is no safe limit, but the World Health Organisation recommends a daily limit of 25 micrograms per cubic metre. Long-term exposure can lead to lung diseases and any exposure can exacerbate conditions such as asthma.

FAQs

Where do I see the data?

Once you connect your Strava account to AirTrack and complete your first activity, your air quality data will appear in two places:

Strava Feed: The data will be displayed in the activity subheading of your Strava feed, giving you a quick overview of your air quality during that activity.

AirTrack Dashboard: Your detailed data will also be available in the AirTrack dashboard. For basic users, this includes your latest 10 activities. For premium users, you can explore your air quality exposure, AQScore, and insights in more depth with unlimited history, heatmaps, and personalised recommendations.

It may take a few seconds for the data to load after your activity, but it will appear automatically. If you're having any issues or need assistance, please feel free to message us at
support@airawarelabs.com.

How do I disconnect from Strava?

Go to the settings page in Strava and scroll down to Air Aware Labs, and click Revoke Access. Alternatively, you can disconnect from Strava under Settings in the AirTrack dashboard. This will mean no new activities will appear in your AirTrack dashboard.

How do I cancel my subscription?

To cancel your AirTrack subscription, go to your AirTrack dashboard, choose ‘Subscription’ then ‘Manage Plan’. For more information on how billing works when you cancel, please see our Terms of Use.

Is there a club?

Yes, please visit our Air Aware Labs club on Strava where we can compare activities and build our community. It’s open to join! You can also invite your friends from Strava to join.

How do I share this with friends?

What if I'm not a Strava user?

The CEO of Air Aware Labs was not a Strava user before this launch! When you click on ‘Sign up for free’ and connect your Strava account it will offer the option of signing up for Strava so you can do both at once!

How do I provide feedback?

Please use our club to post ideas, send anything to us directly at hello@airawarelabs.com or use the Contact form. We love to hear from you!

Why don’t you use an AQI score?

Many air quality services use an overall score (known as an Air Quality Index) to give information about current air quality. This combines nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, ozone and sometimes other pollutants into a single number. It can be hard to get an AQI that is meaningful globally and we want to be global! We are also aware of the different impacts on health from nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter and want to help users understand these better.

For Premium and Pro users, we have developed a scoring system that takes into account the reasonable choices open to you. We think this is more meaningful to users' individual circumstances.

That said, if our presentation of the data isn’t working for you, please tell us!

How does AirTrack calculate my Time Quality score?

Your Time Quality score reflects the air quality conditions during the time of your activity. Air pollution levels fluctuate throughout the day, typically peaking during rush hours due to traffic and other factors such as industrial emissions or weather patterns.  To improve your Time of Day score, consider scheduling outdoor activities when traffic and pollution levels are lower, such as early mornings or later in the evening - AirTrack provides detailed colour coded variations of the air pollution over the past week.

How does AirTrack calculate my Route Quality score?

The Route score evaluates the air quality along the specific path or route you take during your activity. This score is influenced by the decisions you make about the roads, paths, or areas you choose to travel through. As you travel along your chosen route, AirTrack analyses the air quality at multiple points along your path. We reference the WHO short-term Air Quality Guidelines to provide a health-based factor of your route. To improve your Route score, try to select paths that avoid highly polluted areas.

How will you use my data?

When you sign up for AirTrack we will ask about your communication preferences. Please see our Privacy Policy for further information.

What do the Strava permissions mean and what data do you access?

When you connect the Air Aware Labs app to Strava, we need to access certain fields to be able to work properly.

Permission
Purpose
Can I deselect it?
View data about your public profile
Required to connect Air Aware Labs to Strava
No - it's not possible to deselect this option
View data about your activities
Required to work out where and when the activity took place, to calculate air quality information
No - otherwise we can't calculate the correct air quality information
View data about your private activities
As above, but for private activities
Yes - you can deselect this option, but we can't calculate air quality information for private activities. Public activities will be processed
Upload your activities from Air Aware Labs to Strava
Required for us to update the description box with air quality information
No - we can't add in air quality information to your activity without this permission

My activities are private - can you still add air quality data?

Yes - as long as you tick "View data about your private activities" when you connect your account, we can add air quality data to your activity.

I only want you to access public activities - is this ok?

Yes - if you untick "View data about your private activities" when you connect your account, we only receive information about your public activities and will only annotate those ones - we can't view or access your private activities.

Do you play nicely with other apps like Bandók?

We do! We have tested it and there are no clashes between Bandók and AirTrack.

What if I want to write something else in the description box?

That's fine! We take whatever is in the description box and append air quality data information when the activity is processed. You can add additional text to the description box for each activity, whether to include more context, specify conditions, or note particular observations.
