Women and air pollution

In this article, we examine the ways in which air pollution affects women’s health, arguing that air pollution is not only an environmental issue, but also a critical gender and environmental justice concern that demands a targeted and inclusive policy response.

With over 230,000 activities logged by AirTrackers around the world, we are increasingly able to use our own data to bring insights into air pollution exposure. While spatial data plays an important role, we believe the true insights - and therefore action - come when connecting that to people. We launched some of this data for World Cities Day, bringing insights into highest and lowest recorded nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter exposure in urban centres across the world. Please join us on our mission - Personalising Air Quality, for everyone.

Hot off the press

  • we launched two new affiliations over the past fortnight. As part of a partnership on clean air, Forest has given us pro bono advertising space for AirTrack to support their riders. With Asthma + Lung UK we are giving their runners for the London Landmarks half-marathon access to AirTrack Premium
  • we have been rolling out enhancements of our AirTrack app, as well as continuing to build products to fit business requirements - watch this space for more on our pilots
  • we will be delving into how to measure our impact in the coming months, including looking at a health economics assessment and considering our Social Return on Investment. We are likely to involve users and wider stakeholders in this so shout if you'd like to be involved!

Meet the partner

We are running a series of spotlights on the many people and organisations who have supported our journey so far. This week, we are meeting Caty Keen, founder of Our Planet Needs You, with a background in growth marketing and community partnerships.  Caty says, "Our Planet Needs You (OPNY) is a community-led start-up born in White City, London. Now active in 10 schools across Hammersmith and Fulham, this story-driven programme teaches primary pupils nine practical actions to tackle pollution and climate change. Each action becomes a fun challenge, with schools earning points and competing for a place on the OPNY Leaderboard. The fifth challenge, Active Travel, encourages pupils to walk or wheel to school instead of travelling by fossil-fuelled vehicles.

"With support from Air Aware Labs, students learned about nitrogen dioxide exposure and pollution “hot spots” using local air-quality visualisations. They discovered how choosing routes away from busy roads and closer to green spaces can significantly reduce the air pollution they breathe. It was a powerful and engaging way to introduce pupils to the invisible threat of poor air quality, and to show how simple daily choices can make a real difference."
