Air Aware Labs to provide air quality data for London Diamond League

As thousands of fans head to London Stadium for this year's London Diamond League, elite athletes will be preparing for every aspect of competition, from training and nutrition to the weather on race day. This year, Air Aware Labs is adding another important layer to that picture by providing live air quality data, helping make the invisible visible for athletes, spectators and organisers alike.

CEO Featured in Executives Diary: Louise Thomas knows impact won't get you funded

Louise Thomas knows the word “impact” will clear a room of investors faster than a fire alarm. She also knows that, on its own, moral urgency rarely moves a term sheet from maybe to yes. So when she pitches Air Aware Labs to potential backers, she does not lead with saving the world. She talks about the billions spent annually on health, fitness, chronic disease management, and performance optimization. Then she points to something those massive markets barely measure: the air people actually breathe while they exercise, commute, and live their daily lives. She is building a business on that blind spot. Not the feel-good story about clean air as a human right, but the hard commercial logic hidden inside eight million annual deaths from air pollution. The Blind Spot Worth Billions.

This week we are thinking about (and doing!) innovation in air quality. With our access to compute credits at the AI Research Resource, we are able to progress our modelling including benefits for users such as lower pollution route planning. And partnering with innovative hardware companies like MedicAir means we can bring all-round insights to protect health. With CBI (Confederation of British Industry) and Clean Air Fund highlighting the economic benefits of clean air this week, we are doing our bit to turn innovation into benefits across the economy. Please join us on our mission - Personalising Air Quality, for everyone.

Hot off the press

  • we were overjoyed to win the Reset Connect climate innovation competition - the £10k prize will help us to develop our cleaner route planner and other tools to help reduce pollution exposure. On the same day we celebrated in Parliament being finalists for both SEIS Investee Company and Entrepreneur of the Year. We've also loved getting recognition in Executives Diary
  • the main elements of our pilot with the London Legacy Development Corporation are now complete and we are about to embark on the Nexus collective. Alongside a new grant with researchers at University College London, this will allow us to accelerate our work on women's health, in particular helping pregnant women reduce their exposure to pollution
  • we loved partnering with UrbanBetter and CELIA CIC for events spanning Clean Air Day and London Climate Action Week. The value of all types of data, including experiential data, was clear when it comes to awareness and action on air pollution.

Meet the team

This edition, we are re-introducing Dan Harris, our Chief Product Officer and member of our founding team. Dan says: "my career reads like someone who could never quite decide whether to be a strategist, a designer, or a builder, so became all three. Over two decades I've held design and innovation leadership roles at Fjord, Accenture and EY, working with a client list that spans Tesco, Barclays, Vodafone, the BBC, HSBC, JP Morgan and McLaren. The through-line across all of it is simple: an obsession over the truth of the customer's problem - I won't rest until it's been turned into something people genuinely love using. At Air Aware Labs, that focus points at one clear goal: making invisible air pollution something you can see, plan around, and act on before your morning commute, not after.

"Outside of work, I'm happiest when running, cycling and hiking (not together). When I'm still, I'm usually at the cinema, in a gallery, painting, or deep in conversation about music. Home life is busy: three children aged 16, 14 and 3 keep me negotiating on several fronts at once, alongside a cartoon-like golden retriever and a cat in her senior years. And when I'm not building products, I'm often travelling, though will admit to checking the air quality before booking the hotel."
