World Economic Forum: Wearables measure a range of useful data – but are they missing the full picture?

The World Economic Forum asked us to write around wearable tech such as smart watches and rings, and how air pollution data could be integrated to give an all-round view on an individual's health. Wearables could soon measure environmental factors such as air pollution, heat and noise, which all strongly influence performance, recovery and health. Research links short-term air pollution exposure to reduced heart rate variability, increased atrial fibrillation risk and slower race times. Environmental exposure-aware platforms can empower individuals, improve equity, inform city planning and enable preventive healthcare at scale.

As we build new features and product offers, we are reminding ourselves why we are doing this. Not only does air pollution lead to 8 million deaths worldwide, but it also costs the global economy at least $3 trillion. A lot of this is in lost productivity. So we were happy to see the latest study which concluded that improvements in air quality in London have led to an 18% reduction in sick days, as well as annual health savings of £37m. To stay on top of the latest air pollution affecting you, please join us on our mission - Personalising Air Quality, for everyone.

Hot off the press

  • we've been out talking about AirTrack and our company story to many audiences! A Friends of the Earth event, a central London school and an investor meeting. And coming up next week, a talk at the Mobilityways ZC3 conference. We are loving how engaged everyone is!
  • we've been finalising our work with Sustrans and Brent Council looking at exposure for residents. We're also considering how to take this thinking further, including through our upcoming article for the ICE's flagship journal Civil Engineering
  • our corporate video produced by students at MetFilm London is now live - check it out!

Meet the team

This week we are meeting, Michael Song, our new AI Scientist. Michael says: "with an MSc in Computing from Imperial College London and a strong foundation in AI and data analysis, I’m passionate about using technology to solve real-world challenges. Over the past few years, I’ve integrated machine learning models for mobile and web applications, led technical projects spanning augmented reality and computer vision, and collaborated across disciplines to turn research into impact. I’m incredibly excited to be joining Air Aware Labs as an AI Scientist!

"This role aligns deeply with my values - leveraging AI and data science to improve public health through actionable air quality insights. From building personalised pollution exposure models to quantifying health impacts, I look forward to working with a brilliant, mission-driven team at the intersection of environmental health and innovation. Grateful to Louise Thomas and William Hicks for the opportunity - can’t wait to contribute to meaningful change and help shape a more breathable future!"
