World Economic Forum: Wearables measure a range of useful data – but are they missing the full picture?

The World Economic Forum asked us to write around wearable tech such as smart watches and rings, and how air pollution data could be integrated to give an all-round view on an individual's health. Wearables could soon measure environmental factors such as air pollution, heat and noise, which all strongly influence performance, recovery and health. Research links short-term air pollution exposure to reduced heart rate variability, increased atrial fibrillation risk and slower race times. Environmental exposure-aware platforms can empower individuals, improve equity, inform city planning and enable preventive healthcare at scale.

Welcome to the thirty-seventh edition of our newsletter, as we move towards testing our low pollution routing function in time for Clean Air Day on 19 June! This newsletter is aimed at investors, collaborators, future hires and early adopters of our products.

Working on air pollution involves connecting with many other issues - whether it is the multitude of health issues it impacts, social issues such as inequality or other environmental issues including climate change. This week we focused on the connection to plastic pollution, as much of that is breathed in as a result of airborne microplastics or the impact of incineration. Despite its multi-faceted nature, as a start-up we need to focus on what our users want to improve their lives: the clear ask is for low pollution routes, so we are focused delivering our prototype in the next two weeks. We have now surpassed 150,000 activities logged with air pollution exposure data, so now is the time to help bring that exposure down significantly. Please join us on our mission - Personalising Air Quality, for everyone.

Meet the team

This week we are meeting Anika Pruntel our new intern. Anika says says: "I am currently a rising fourth-year student at the University of Virginia double majoring in Economics and Public Policy & Leadership. I am particularly interested in environmental regulation, the associated market impacts, and international development initiatives.

"I am looking forward to applying my skills and aiding Air Aware Labs with user research, marketing, and additional analysis. This internship will provide me with the opportunity to explore my academic interests and collaborate with an innovative team. I am excited to learn more about startup culture, the global technology industry, and applicable pollution reduction efforts. Projects such as assisting with the development of a streamlined data reporting system, aiding with content creation, synthesizing key research findings, and tailoring articles to various audiences will help expand my technical knowledge and contribute to a meaningful mission."
