World Economic Forum: the role of AI in reducing urban pollution

The World Economic Forum asked us to write about the role of AI in reducing urban pollution. Artificial intelligence (AI) enhances how we detect and forecast urban air pollution by analyzing large, complex datasets from sensors, satellites and even crowdsourced data. AI tools offer personalized insights into pollution exposure, enabling individuals to make healthier choices in their daily routines. While AI holds great promise, its deployment must be inclusive and ethically guided – without careful implementation, it could exacerbate existing inequalities, especially in underserved regions.

The impact of wood burning is getting significant coverage in the UK and elsewhere. Global Action Plan has called for it to be phased out and Mums for Lungs are putting a spotlight on it too. Air pollution is a significant urban issue, but its sources stretch far beyond city limits. A recent study in the West Midlands showed how wood burning (25%), traffic (22%), and secondary aerosols (25%) — often driven by agricultural emissions — significantly impact air quality in Birmingham. Many people do not realise that air pollution is typically worse in the winter months, as more wood and other fuels are burnt, and the cold temperatures can trap the pollution. We have more evidence on the impact of wood burning in our recent blog. To help everyone understand and reduce their exposure to this threat to health, please join us on our mission - Personalising Air Quality, for everyone.

Meet the team

This week, we welcome Abigail Manthous who will be joining us in January as research and marketing intern. Abby says: As a student, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Connecticut, I have developed a strong foundation in the sciences, particularly in understanding the intricate roles of biology in the human body and environment. Beyond academics, my role as a Logistics Supervisor at NeuroNeeds, a nutritional supplement startup, expanded my knowledge and developed useful skills including marketing strategies, team collaboration, and time management.

I am incredibly excited to get started at Air Aware Labs as a Research and Marketing Intern. I look forward to contributing my skills and experiences to support the company and its mission. I am most excited to experience different cultural perspectives and to collaborate with an international team, as this will provide valuable experience that I can carry forward into my future endeavors. I want to thank Louise Thomas and William Hicks for giving me this amazing opportunity, and I am looking forward to working alongside Lía Budnik within the Marketing and Communications Department!
