From VOCs to CO2: why indoor air pollution matters

Everyday the average human inhales 11,000 litres of indoor air, constantly exposing them to the risks of indoor air pollution. Indoor air pollution is the presence of dangerous pollutants in the air inside buildings such as homes, schools or workplaces. These pollutants could be toxic chemicals, dangerous gases or airborne dust particles, but most commonly originate from indoor daily chores. In fact, researchers found that globally 2.4 billion people are directly exposed to indoor air pollution from cooking and heating with polluting fuels. From worsening asthma to life threatening lung conditions, indoor air pollution poses an invisible threat to human health everyday.

Welcome to the sixty-third edition of our newsletter, as we launch new features to reduce exposure to indoor pollution and collaborate with international organisations on outdoor events. This newsletter is aimed at investors, collaborators, future hires and early adopters of our products.

Those who have followed our journey know we started from outdoor air pollution and helping people exercising outdoors to understand the differences in pollution levels to improve their performance and long-term health. But we couldn't stop there: everyone spends time indoors, and the pollution risks - as well as the strategies to reduce them - are quite different. So we aim to help people identify and reduce exposure wherever they can: perhaps a high pollution day outdoors is the time to use the indoor purifier; a lower pollution day could be when you plan a long run and ventilate during cooking. We aim to give those holistic insights to address this significant threat to health. Please join us on our mission - Personalising Air Quality, for everyone.

Meet the team

This edition, we are introducing Mia Marie Simons, our newest intern. Mia says: "Through my studies in Biomedical Sciences, I have developed a particular strong foundation in human biology and organic chemistry as well as its role in the environment. In addition to working at Smiles Of Austin Dentistry and shadowing various Orthopaedic surgeons, I have gained valuable clinical exposure that has helped me develop skills such as adaptability in fast paced environments, clear communication, and time management. I am passionate about human health and wellbeing, and am committed to making a positive impact on public health.

"With that being said, I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to be the Research and Marketing Intern at Air Aware Labs. Not only am I eager to learn more about the research and innovation, I am also excited to immerse myself into a new professional environment and experience various different cultural perspectives. I am thrilled to be a part of Air Aware Labs and the mission of making clean air accessible to all. Thank you to Louise Thomas and William Hicks for giving me this opportunity and Lía Budnik for leading me. I'm looking forward to learning from the team!"
