Mining

Metal mining releases toxic metals and gases at every stage of extraction, waste handling and processing, making it a major industrial source of air pollution.

General

  • US Toxics Release Inventory data show metal mining was responsible for 92% of industrial mercury emissions and 94% of industrial arsenic emissions, releasing lead, cadmium and sulphur dioxide that drive acid rain and respiratory harm (Earthworks, 2026).
