World Economic Forum: Wearables measure a range of useful data – but are they missing the full picture?

The World Economic Forum asked us to write around wearable tech such as smart watches and rings, and how air pollution data could be integrated to give an all-round view on an individual's health. Wearables could soon measure environmental factors such as air pollution, heat and noise, which all strongly influence performance, recovery and health. Research links short-term air pollution exposure to reduced heart rate variability, increased atrial fibrillation risk and slower race times. Environmental exposure-aware platforms can empower individuals, improve equity, inform city planning and enable preventive healthcare at scale.

Air pollution during the London Marathon: what the data shows

Road closures during the London Marathon reduce traffic and often improve air quality along the route, though effects vary by pollutant and location.

With International Women's Day last weekend, we have been revisiting the evidence we have pulled together about the impact of air pollution on women. There are gender disparities in women's lifestyles leading to greater risk of exposure to pollution, as well as biological differences meaning the physiological effect can be more severe. This relates to respiratory, cardiovascular, dementia, cancer, fertility and pregnancy impacts. More positively, we took the opportunity of 8 March to celebrate women working in air quality. Please join us on our mission - Personalising Air Quality, for everyone.

Hot off the press

  • this week our CEO had the opportunity to present some of this evidence and solutions at the WHH Women’s Health Horizons alongside the Deputy Mayor of London and other distinguished speakers. We are seeing more interest in fertility and pregnancy issues in particular, including this highlight from Dearbump
  • on wider health issues, we have had our latest blog published by World Economic Forum covering the blind spot in wearable technology: the environment. We argue bringing air quality data directly onto wearable devices could have a huge impact on preventative health. We have also been looking at air pollution levels during sporting events with the upcoming London marathon in mind
  • we have launched a partnership with FuturePlus to include air quality in their ESG framework. We are excited to give air pollution greater visibility with the companies in their network. And we have been promoting our work with BridgeAI at their showcase and joining the UK Clean Air Champions conference.

Meet the investor

This edition, we are re-introducing Alan Debonneville, who as Co-founder of Arcanys Ventures has provided follow on investment in our current round. Alan says: "As a hands-on investor with engineers embedded directly in the Air Aware Labs team, Arcanys Ventures has had a level of visibility into this company that few investors get. What we observed over the first 12 months left no doubt: Air Aware Labes operates with a fast pace of innovation, rigorous engineering execution, and a communication culture that is proactive, transparent, and built for scale.

"Louise, Will and Sacha are the kind of founders who combine technical depth with operational clarity. They flag risks early, make decisions quickly, and hold their team to a high standard without losing momentum. That combination is rare.

"This is precisely why we chose to follow on. At Arcanys Ventures, we reinvest when the evidence is compelling, not as a matter of policy. In this case, the evidence was clear. We are confident in where this company is headed. The founding team has demonstrated that they can execute under pressure, and the market they are going after gives that execution real room to matter."
