Step up for Clean Air

Ella Roberta Adoo-Kissi-Debrah was born happy and healthy in 2004, and by the age of seven was diagnosed with asthma. Sadly in 2013, Ella passed away, and her death, caused by a severe asthma attack exacerbated by air pollution, which led to a landmark ruling recognising air pollution as a direct cause of death.

Hay fever and air pollution

That familiar tickle in your nose, the escalating waves of sneezing, the relentless itch in your eyes… If spring in 2025 feels less like a season of joy and more like an allergy battlefield, you’re far from alone. Hay fever sufferers around the world are facing an increasingly challenging reality. Recent "pollen bombs," coupled with the ever-present issue of air pollution, have created a perfect storm, intensifying and prolonging the impact for millions.

With Earth Day earlier this week and World Environment Day and Clean Air Day coming up, we are reflecting on the ways air quality intersects with other environmental issues. The theme of Earth Day was clean energy, which has strong interactions with clean air, which we explore in our latest article. We look forward to discussing this more at a Friends of the Earth event on Monday. Looking ahead to World Environment Day and the focus on plastic pollution - we will be focusing on how much particulate matter in the air comes from microplastics. And the big day of the air pollution world in the UK - Clean Air Day on 19 June where we hope to unveil new AirTrack features! To stay on top of the latest air pollution affecting you, please join us on our mission - Personalising Air Quality, for everyone.

Meet the team

This week, we are meeting Foster Conlin who has been working with us for the past seven weeks as a finance intern. Foster says: "I’m currently a third-year student at St. John’s University, majoring in Finance with a minor in accounting. My passion for understanding how financial systems influence business operations has aligned perfectly with my internship at AAL, where I’ve been able to apply that interest in a meaningful way. Outside of the office, I’m a big fan of football — whether it's watching games or playing with friends — and I enjoy staying active in general. I’m excited to be part of such an innovative and collaborative environment and look forward to connecting with more of you during the rest of my time here."

"My time at Air Aware Labs so far has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I've had the opportunity to dive into a variety of projects that have helped me expand my practical knowledge of finance. Some of the key areas I've been working on include budgeting and forecasting, researching venture capital firms, and conducting industry and sector analyses. These tasks have not only strengthened my technical skills but also given me valuable insight into the financial strategies that support innovation and growth within the company. It’s been inspiring to be surrounded by such a driven and knowledgeable team, and I’m grateful for all the mentorship and learning opportunities I’ve received so far."
