This Saturday, 11 July, marks World Population Day, a UN observance held each year on the anniversary of the day the world's population reached five billion in 1987. This year's theme, set by UNFPA, is "Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people – today and for the future," a fitting moment to look at how population and air quality intersect, since young people are among those most affected by the air they grow up breathing.

As thousands of fans head to London Stadium for this year's London Diamond League, elite athletes will be preparing for every aspect of competition, from training and nutrition to the weather on race day.
