How temperature shapes the air we breathe

When we step outside on a summer afternoon, we can often feel the dense, stifling quality of the air. In winter, the stillness can feel even thicker, making us feel like we’re choking on air. Most of us assume that air pollution is at its worst on scorching days, but in reality, extreme temperatures, whether high or low, greatly shape the air around us. So, how do hot and cold temperatures influence air pollution levels, and what does it mean for our health?

World Economic Forum: Why and how business leaders should include air quality in decision-making

The World Economic Forum asked us air quality in business decision-making. Despite its significant health and economic impacts, air quality remains under-addressed in corporate strategy. Leading companies are integrating air quality into their operations, using emission tracking, collaborating on pollution reduction and innovating product lines. Businesses that embed air quality into strategy stand to gain in talent acquisition, investor trust, regulatory preparedness and overall sustainability leadership.

The Vital Role of Insects

Buzzing bees, laden with golden grains and circling patches of flowers, are more than just a pretty sight. They are engaging in the important process of pollen collection, with each journey from plant to plant representing a dynamic interaction. But how does this intersect with air pollution? We investigate more here!

Plastic Pollution and the Air

On World Environment Day, we investigate the links between plastic and air pollution. When we think of plastic pollution, we often imagine oceans and landfills, but plastic is in the air too. As plastics break down, they release microplastics into the environment, which can travel thousands of kilometres through the air - from cities to mountaintops. Recent studies show that the average person could inhale 16.2 bits of plastic per hour, which is equivalent to a credit card in plastic each week.

World Economic Forum: the role of AI in reducing urban pollution

The World Economic Forum asked us to write about the role of AI in reducing urban pollution. Artificial intelligence (AI) enhances how we detect and forecast urban air pollution by analyzing large, complex datasets from sensors, satellites and even crowdsourced data. AI tools offer personalized insights into pollution exposure, enabling individuals to make healthier choices in their daily routines. While AI holds great promise, its deployment must be inclusive and ethically guided – without careful implementation, it could exacerbate existing inequalities, especially in underserved regions.

World Economic Forum: 6 inspirational clean air stories from 2024

World Economic Forum asked us to write about inspirational stories on air quality in the run up to the World Health Organisation 2nd Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health. City-based and health initiatives are helping major cities reduce air pollution and climate emissions. New technologies, such as AI tools for pollution modelling and hyper-local personalized tracking of exposure, are helping tackle air pollution effects. While air quality programmes have historically been underfunded, new commitments could signal a shift toward greater investment in future.

The Vital Role of Wetlands

Covering just 6% of the earth’s surface, wetlands are vital for human survival. While wetlands are well-known for their critical role in supporting biodiversity, they also play an equally vital, though overlooked, role in regulating air quality and the climate. However, rising air pollution and climate change are putting wetlands under increasing pressure, threatening their ability to filter pollutants, store carbon, and sustain biodiversity.
